about
Sentomea (Sander Schuurman, based in Amsterdam) is an audiovisual artist working at the intersection of sound, image, and algorithmic systems. His practice explores organic textures, intuitive composition, and generative processes, using technology to bring sonic and visual domains into cohesive, responsive environments. In his musical work, sound design serves as a primary foundation, while improvisation and hardware-based performance shape the final outcome. Visually, he often uses photography and film as source material, which are subsequently transformed through sound-driven algorithms into evolving imagery.
The development of this practice is rooted in three disciplines that evolved in parallel over time: music, visual work, and technology. Schuurman has been active in electronic music since the 1990s as a producer, live performer, and DJ. Alongside this, he studied computer science and has worked for over fifteen years as a freelance creative developer. In parallel, he developed a visual practice based on photography, timelapse, and film since the early 2000s. The introduction of real-time visual programming environments marked a turning point, allowing these disciplines to come together within a single practice. While some works begin from a musical idea and others from a visual starting point, both elements ultimately develop in relation to one another.
Parallel to his artistic practice, Schuurman’s background in computer science and his long-standing work as a creative developer inform a technically rigorous approach. A defining aspect of his work is the integration of sound, visuals, and underlying technology within a single authorship. This enables him to design and construct complete audiovisual systems while maintaining control over both the conceptual and technical aspects of each project.
His recent work reflects a shift from a predominantly hardware-based approach toward the computer as an instrument within his musical process. Where earlier workflows relied on hardware systems, his current use of software-based instruments and custom tools allows for more detailed and complex sonic textures. Within his audiovisual work, he focuses on introducing organic qualities into digital environments. His practice moves away from purely abstract forms in favor of work that evokes a stronger sense of connection and emotional impact in sound and image.
With over two decades of experience in music production and performance, Sentomea’s sonic language is rooted in experimental electronic music, often characterized by atmospheric structures and lo-fi textures. His work has been released on labels including Delsin Records and MOS Recordings, and includes collaborations with artists such as Boris Telegen and Olga Wagemans. It has been presented and exhibited at Amsterdam Dance Event, Haute Rotterdam, IPIHAN, and Ron Mandos Gallery.
